Chicago Cubs

That’s four straight series wins for the Cubs. Yeah, the opponents haven’t been great, but that’s the thing: teams that aren’t atrocious tend to beat bad teams. And the Cubs are not atrocious. They’re just not great.

Today was all about Franmil and The Back-Up Catchers, with the very large slugger doubling twice (he’s now up to six extra-base hits in his seven games with the Cubs), and the catchers driving in the Cubs’ three runs.

P.J. Higgins homered early off of old friend Cory Abbott:

Not to be outdone by his fellow back-up catcher, Yan Gomes drove in the lead run in the 7th:

Drew Smyly pitched just about like he has all year – solid for 5-ish innings – and then the bullpen cruised. Two of those bullpen innings came from the re-activated lefty Steven Brault, who has been fantastic in his new, full-time relief role. He’s pitching his way into being tendered a contract after the season.
