Let’s Enjoy a Bearsless Sunday as Football Returns For Everyone Else and Other Bears Bullets

I spent a chunk of my Saturday doing some much-needed house cleaning, then rewarded myself with some adult beverages with friends. The plan is to take it easy today, as it is the first NFL Sunday of the year. We have finally made it, friends!

  • The latest chapter of the Antonio Brown saga ended with him landing in New England. But hours before the signing became official, I asked if you wanted Brown on the Bears. And it turns out you answered emphatically in one direction:
  • A whopping 74 percent of the 5,015 participants who voted selected no … and I understand why. For as gifted, talented, and skilled as Brown is, the Bears have enough headaches as it is. The last thing this team probably needs is a sideshow derailing things. Then again, I can see why 26 percent of you were “in” on the idea of the Bears signing Brown. The Bears offense doesn’t have an All-Pro receiver, and adding anyone who could make Mitch Trubisky’s job easier is something that should be embraced. In the end, we’re talking about water under the bridge.
  • You know what could help out Trubisky? More of this guy:

  • David Montgomery was slippery on Thursday. No surprise here. After all, he was PFF’s college record-holder for broken tackles. I want to like how the Bears used Montgomery, Tarik Cohen, and Mike Davis on the field at the same time on Thursday, but they didn’t do it often enough to scratch that itch. If the Bears offense is going to rebound from an awful Week 1 performance, it will need balance (more rush attempts) and more formations (or personnel groupings) where it won’t be easy to key on just one guy. Give Trubisky options, but also take the ball out of his hands and give it to playmakers like Montgomery and Cohen.
  • Some candid commentary from Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young on the Bears’ QB1:
  • Concern and growth are words you don’t want to still hear at this point. Young’s description of Trubisky’s interception as a “high school stare-down” and “criminal” are painful to hear, if only because they are true.
  • This is not a list you want to be on:
  • Jon Gruden tried getting his jokes off on Khalil Mack and I wasn’t having any of it:
  • Keep crying, Jon.
  • At some point, Gruden needs to come to peace that he goofed on his handling of the Mack situation. It was fumbled from the start, he made it worse with his quips about Mack while he was away from the team, and ultimately shipped him out.
  • Bedding, big ole canopies, and more are your Deals of the Day at Amazon today.
  • Something to keep an eye on ahead of next Sunday’s Bears-Broncos game:
  • This betting line is also worth keeping tabs on:
  • It’s college football scouting SZN:
  • Because I know you care, the quarterbacks in that game combined to go 65 of 100 for 929 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. Are Riley Neal, Deuce Wallace, and Elijah Sinclair on your radar? Their not on mine either. Well, not yet at least.
