Of Course We’re Celebrating the GOAT Running Backs and Other Bears Bullets

The Bulls are teetering on a Marc Trestman-like experience, aren’t they?

Preseason hype full of postseason dreams. Bad losses. A coach who seems to be over his head and on the verge of losing the locker room. I couldn’t help but think of the parallels as I started writing today’s Bullets — especially after Zach LaVine spoke out in the wake of last night’s loss.

It is amazing that the clean slate that was given to the Bulls to start the year has already been mucked up, while the good vibes that accompanied the clean slate are also a distant memory. It is only November! I guess it’s up to the Bears (uh oh!) to salvage the weekend.

  • Of course Walter Payton and Gale Sayers were selected to the NFL’s All-Time Team:

  • I doubt Jim Brown was alone in feeling this:

  • Barry Sanders really nails it on the head with his assessment of Sayers:

  • What is left to write about Payton and Sayers that hasn’t already been written. Two gold-standard running backs who were icons of the game were destined to make the cut here. And if they ranked the running backs 1-12, I would bet Payton and Sayers would check in at 1-2.
  • Moving on from legends of the past to stars of today, Khalil Mack has the right mindset going into Sunday’s game agains the Giants:
  • Mack knows that his job is to get the quarterback, cause havoc, take away the ball, and lead a defense that still ranks in the top-10 in points and yards, while checking in as the league’s fourth-best unit in Football Outsiders’ DVOA metric. But that Mack feels that he isn’t doing his job (despite constant double- and triple-teams) says a lot about where his mind is going into this game. Despite the hurdles, Mack still thinks he should plow through and do damage. The struggle has been real, but Chuck Pagano sounds ready to get creative to get Mack out of his slump. Good timing, coach!
  • This is impressive if you think about how much the passing game has struggled to get the little things right:

  • Chris Roling of Bleacher Report highlights the lowlights that happen to be each team’s biggest failures. Frankly, I have no argument to Rolign’s suggestions that the Bears failure to bolster their tight ends room was the biggest gaffe of the year. Trey Burton finished the 2018 season hurt, Adam Shaheen started last year on injured reserve, and the tight ends behind them on the roster were far too inexperienced to expect anything more than the bare minimum from in the year to come. And yet, the Bears did nothing to shake things up, banking on better health and natural progression. Since neither of those things have come to fruition, we now look at a position group that (once again) should be prioritized in the offseason.
  • There will be plenty of talent to keep tabs on in this one:
  • You know it’s no good when you have to respond to the mayor’s quips:
  • The Giants are getting healthy at the right time:
