Juuuuust to be clear up front: even if the Browns pull a shocker at number one, I still don’t think the 49ers pass on Myles Garrett at number two. So, don’t get your hopes up on that particular front.
That said, Adam Schefter continues to report that he’s heard UNC quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is under consideration for that top overall pick by the Cleveland Browns (via PFT): “I continue to hear that Mitchell Trubisky is square in consideration and may turn out to be the No. 1 pick. Now I know everyone thinks Myles Garrett’s going to be the pick, and I will not be surprised if that’s the case …. But I have got very smart, very well-connected people telling me over the last 24 hours that they think Trubisky’s going to be the No. 1 pick.”
Schefter isn’t alone, either, as Dan Pompei reports he hears the same divide among the Browns’ decision makers about whom to select. He even predicts the pick will be Trubisky.
To say that would be a surprise at this point is an understatement.
Yes, the Browns are known to love Trubisky, who grew up a Browns fan in Ohio, and is thought by many to be the top quarterback prospect in the draft. And, yes, if they do not take him at number one, there’s a very good chance he will not still be there for them when their next pick – 12th overall – comes around.
But there are so many pick-sellers between picks 1 and 12 that I cannot believe the Browns would just take Trubisky at one instead of ponying up a couple second round picks to move up from 12 (again, this assumes they truly love Trubisky and desperately want him). For what it’s worth, PFT theorizes that the Browns could be angling to trade down to a spot where they can still get Trubisky, while some other team pops up to number one to get Garrett.
We’ll find out soon enough when the draft gets underway this evening. I fully expect to hear Garrett’s name announced first, and then the drama about what the 49ers and Bears will do is going to hit a fever pitch. If the 49ers do not trade their pick, and if they do not draft Trubisky, it sure seems like the Bears will be in a mad scramble to at least find out if the Browns want to move up to three.
