The Minnesota Vikings have three starting-caliber quarterbacks who are becoming unrestricted free agents and are still on the prowl for improvement.
And to show they aren’t bluffing, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the Vikings have placed a phone call to the agent of free-agent-to-be Drew Brees.
Yes, we’re talking about the same Drew Brees who has a Super Bowl championship, two AP Offensive Player of the Year awards, 11 Pro Bowl appearances, and a first-team All-Pro nomination under his belt. And yes, we’re discussing the possibility of that Drew Brees taking over for Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater, and Sam Bradford in Minnesota. Oh, and yes, you better believe we are on high alert if Brees takes his talents to the Twin Cities.
Brees emerging as an option for the Vikings comes as the team searches for an upgrade at quarterback. Even though Keenum, Bradford, and Bridgewater have performed admirably over the last few years, none of those players holds a candle to what Brees is and can be – even in the later stages of his career. Brees played at an MVP level in 2017 and showed he probably has a few more prime years left in the tank.
Where Brees spends those years is now open for discussion, after the Saints’ exclusive negotiation window closed on Monday at 11 a.m. New Orleans remains the odds-on favorite to retain the future Hall of Fame quarterback, but the inability of the two sides to come to a deal has opened up an avenue for any team without a franchise quarterback to dial up Brees and try to sway him from returning to New Orleans.
Brees finishing his career anywhere other than New Orleans is a long shot. And even if Minnesota has been connected to Kirk Cousins for longer, it would be more of a surprise if the Vikings *didn’t* reach out to Brees’ representation as soon as legally possible.
